but he just got over a relationship with someone else..i don't think he wants to get back together with her but she does. I'm not exactly a girl who will make it obvious i like someone.

Maybe you need to wait for a while for him to settle down first. Well you have to at least give some hints or signals to show that you like him. You can do something like always look at him, smile, be around, talk to him etc...
